Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychological therapy for the treatment of depression and many common anxiety disorders.  This includes Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) (more commonly known as Worry), Agoraphobia, Health Anxiety, Social Phobia, Specific Phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Low Self Esteem, Imposter Syndrome and many others.

Therapy always begins with an assessment to determine what your main symptoms are and set some therapy goals to work towards.  This will involve taking some details of your history and health background.  CBT mainly focuses on the here and now and how to make progress going forwards, but in some cases it can be helpful to explore the past to make sense of the present.  The assessment can usually be completed over one 60 minute session.

We then move into the treatment phase where we would begin to explore the areas raised at assessment and look at tools and techniques to help you become your own therapist and work towards your goals. The number of sessions required varies by individual and their presenting symptoms, but usually people begin to see progress and feel better within the first 8 sessions.  If there are more deep rooted areas that require exploration then we may need more sessions.  This can be discussed at assessment.

EMDR is also an evidence-based therapy which was originally designed to target symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  It has since been shown to help with many other psychological symptoms.  EMDR works by facilitating the mind's natural healing process in the same way that the body heals itself when injured.  Healing occurs when we sleep and enter the rapid eye movement (REM) phase of sleep. EMDR uses this naturally occurring process to aid recovery of psychological hurts by removing any blocks that prevent natural healing.

Treatment always involves an assessment to fully explore the areas that we would need to target to achieve your treatment goals.  This is followed by setting up of the EMDR therapy.  Sessions can range between 60 and 90 minutes depending on what we need to cover.  Most initial and ending sessions are 60 minutes, with most EMDR processing sessions requiring 90 minutes to allow for setting up and debriefing of the work we do during the session.

Please contact us to discuss any questions you may have about EMDR.
